Space 109

Space 109 is a community arts centre in Walmgate, York. Its purpose is to improve communication between the local residents, and to give people (young and old) a place to be creative and artistic.

You can view some 'Portrait' animations I worked on with the young people from Space 109 on here:

I worked with a group of young people from the area, 8-16 years old, for a week to create a film about Walmgate. I helped them create a list of questions to ask and then we went out and interviewed residents. Questions ranged from 'What do you like about Walmgate?' to 'What scares you?', 'What would you change?' and 'Can you name 5 tourist attractions on Walmgate?'. They wanted to show the different opinions of the residents, so we interviewed young people, old people, traders, parents and people who are the perceived troublemakers in the area. With the young people asking the questions, all the adults were surprisingly open in their opinions and we got some very revealing answers.

The final film will be available in the centre for residents to watch, and to relevant policymakers and councillors to highlight opinions and feelings of local residents. Hopefully it will be an ongoing project to be added to and document change in Walmgate.
