'Survival Tips for Deaf Teenagers'

This is a short film made with a group of Deaf teenagers for the award winning Biomation project. In it, they express some of their frustrations about being Deaf, and attitudes they encounter in everyday life. The film takes the viewer through several situations where being Deaf causes the main character a problem – but shows them a way in which to deal with it to their advantage. Animation is used to get the information across in a fun way, and it is intended to be watched and understood by both Deaf and hearing audiences.

It covers common mistakes which the young people commonly found in school, and which make their lives more difficult and frustrating. The film uses animation to get the information across in a fun way, and is intended to be watched and understood by hearing and non-hearing audiences.

‘Aspergers project’

Biomation is a pioneering science and arts project funded by the Wellcome Trust and run through York NHS and City of York Council. The Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) project uses animation and audio to enable young people with AS to explain what it is and express how they feel about it. They give very personal insights which could only be achieved through using these mediums and techniques.

This film is about a project the National Centre for Early Music were running for AimHigher lead by Trombonist and educationalist Dennis Rollins. It shows a group of students improvising to a rhythm and then performing their own piece alongside Dennis Rollins.

The National Centre for Early Music formed a massed choir of 500 primary school children for a spectacular performance at York Minster, to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the composer Purcell. This film shows some of the songs being performed, as well as explaining why Purcell's music is still so well suited to young singers.

'Found Sound' is a film for the National Centre for Early Music which documents a project they

ran over the course of a year in partnership with AimHigher York

and North Yorkshire. The project was run by Backbeat, a percussion group who specialise in using unusual objects to make music - including basketballs and frying pans.

Wellcome Trust: Biomation
‘Diabetes Project ’

Biomation is an award winning pioneering science and arts project funded by the Wellcome Trust and run through York NHS and City of York Council. This film was made by a group of young people aged 11 – 14, four of whom have Diabetes, and four of their friends who do not, to explore the condition. They came up with the idea, then scripted it, created characters, animated and recorded audio for the film. It covers the areas of Blood sugar tests, Insulin injections and Hypos, and will be used to inform newly diagnosed young people by the hospital clinicians.

I was commissioned by QA Research to make a short evaluation film to illustrate findings from their evaluation of 'Work Related Learning' projects run by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. For this, I filmed at three different schools, interviewing students about the courses they were on, and also while they did practical elements of the courses.

This is a film made for the National Centre for Early Music  about the Minster Minstrels, a very well-respected choral group for young people. It features performances recorded at the venue, interviews with some of the group, and insights into a form of music that has profoundly influenced the music we hear today.

A short promotional film created for York Hub, a business centre based in York. Its founder explains the benefits of the centre, the opportunities it allows and how to become a part of it. The video shows the office space, people working in it and its city centre location. The brief was for it to be vibrant, informative concise and to work within the York Hub website.

This film captures a project run by the NCEM to encourage singing in school playgrounds. It shows the joy and excitement of the young people, and the enthusiasm of the teachers and song leaders for this initiative. It was filmed in two schools, and also at an event in the splendour of the NCEM in its 12th Century premises.

Currently licensed by Teachers TV, under the name 'Riding High'. This was a year long project to create a film for a deaf children's charity. It follows 8 young people as they learn to ride motorbikes. In their own words, it shows the difficulties they encounter and successes they achieve and also highlights the particular challenges they face due to their hearing loss.

I put together 6 short (1 - 4 min) Vodcasts for the NCEM to be used as promotional videos for a tour they promoted. The films are short interviews with musicians explaining their role and the overall aim of the Mantra project - to create a fusion of Hindustani and Early Music and to explore this in workshops with young people.

'Comet Assay'

I filmed, edited and authored a training DVD and CD resource detailing how to carry out the Comet Assay procedure for the Department of Nutrition at the University of Oslo. It was shot in Norway, carefully covering the eight different stages in a way that is easy to follow for training purposes. I authored a DVD with supporting materials on a CD.

‘Musicport’

These are 2 short films (6 min each) created for Music4U, following a group of students first of all working with The Balkanatics, to learn how to play Balkan music, and then performing as part of Musicport in Bridlington, 2009. It shows how they learn different time signatures, get to grips with singing in a different language, and finally perform in front of an enthusiastic audience at the Spa in Bridlington.

This film made for the National Centre for Early Music covers a project run for Sing Up where large groups of school children sang in 4 cathedral cities around the country, incluing Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and Southwell Cathedral in Nottinghamshire. It also features an interview with Harry Christophers and performances by The Sixteen with the young people.

The theme for the idents was 'Meet the writers', with Kris and Dave from niCemUm improvising short sketches spoofing their writers lifestyle. 'On The Blog' has been commissioned for a third series.

'St Barnabas Journey'

Anim8ed is a project which takes animation into schools on behalf of the National Media Museum in Bradford. I spent a week working at St Barnabas primary school in York,working with year 1 and 2 pupils to create an animation about a journey on a train. There was a visit to the National Rail Museum in York where they learnt about rail travel, and also filmed on one of the carriages. The pupils created and animated some fantastic artwork illustrating their journeys to the seaside and London.
