Simon Collins: Film maker and Animator
COMMUNITY FILMMAKING: I have been working with young people to create films and animations for the past few years. My approach is to pass on knowledge and technical skills, and then try to facilitate them as they create their own films and develop their own ideas.

I think it's important to stress the benefit of getting on and having a go, even if they have little or no experience. I try to give them enough knowledge and confidence to try something out. Then we look at what they have created and think about how to improve on it next time.

Brainstorming ideas, noting them down on post-its and flip charts, getting everyone to say something, trying to make sure all the participants are involved are all very important. I want each member of a group to have learned something, to feel that they have contributed, and to leave with a sense of satisfaction or an added confidence in themselves.

I think Community filmmaking should have as high production values as the budget allows, and when it comes to the final edit I like to involve young people and to get them to aim as high as possible to create something which people outside of their group would be impressed by.

CORPORATE VIDEO: When I am working on a video for a private company or organisation, I try to get at exactly what they want to get across and who their market is, before beginning production. I like to involve people who know most about the company or market early on so that I can get vital information and ideas from them, and to consult throughout the production to make sure that it is going in the correct direction.

I like to think I am flexible to work with, and if new ideas come along while we are working I will accommodate them. I encourage clients to look at footage and rough cuts, and try to de-mystify the editing process as much as possible. It should be a partnership where at the end of the process both myself and the client are proud of the final production.
